Medical rehabilitation is designed to restore a patient’s ability to work after an illness or to prevent them from becoming unable to work.
Senior citizens and pensioners are also entitled to treatment at a medical rehabilitation facility. Here, the rehabilitation goal is primarily to slow down or avoid the onset of incapacitation. It is extremely important that this is taken into account when applying for medical rehabilitation.
If either acute or chronic illness is affecting your work and intensive treatment is necessary, or if your quality of life is deteriorating in the long-term due to an illness, you should talk to your doctor about the possibility of in-patient or out-patient rehabilitation. Your doctor – whether he or she is a general practitioner, a specialist, or part of your health insurance provider’s medical team – can recommend rehabilitation treatment.
You can also apply for treatment directly
| • |
from your pension provider BfA (professionals, housewives/househusbands) |
| • |
from your health insurance provider (dependents, senior citizens) |
| • |
from your workers’ compensation insurance provider (after a work-related injury or commuting accident, or for occupational diseases) |
| • |
from the Versorgungsamt [pensions office] (for victims of war or violence) |
If you are currently in hospital for treatment or an operation, you can apply for follow-up treatment from there.
Rehabilitation usually lasts 3 weeks. After 4 years, you can apply for more in-patient treatment. In individual cases, you may be eligible to apply earlier.

Follow-up treatments begin directly after a treatment or an operation at an acute care hospital and are designed to integrate patients back into work and society as quickly and as fully as possible. Post-operative patients are referred by their acute care hospital. The admission date will be arranged between the hospital and our admissions department.
This is a type of rehabilitation offered for existing orthopaedic illnesses, and which must be applied for in advance from the organisation responsible for payment. Patients can only be admitted with the prior approval of the payer. The admission date will be arranged directly with the patient.
Depending on the type of insurance, private medical insurance schemes may cover rehabilitation costs. Patients who pay for their own medical treatment and who are entitled to an allowance for rehabilitation must apply for proof of entitlement at the appropriate allowance office before being admitted to the clinic. The Schwertbad Rehabilitation Clinic is a recognised facility for recipients of this type of assistance. Please contact us for our conditions of admission.
Our admissions team is available Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm (core hours). Our receptionists will be happy to assist you at other times. You can contact us at the following phone numbers:
